Dangerous waters

Dangerous waters

Although all living creatures need water to survive, this liquid of life can be deadly as well. Humans cannot breathe underwater, so the biggest concern is drowning. This is most likely to happen to unskilled swimmers in fast rivers or lakes with underwater whirlpools. In addition to that, people are more used to swimming in salty water, which helps them stay on the surface. Freshwater does not have the same feature so many swimmers go too far from the shore, running out of energy before they are able to come back. Another concern are head bumps and river rapids. With extreme sports such as rafting (Bovec, Soca) and canyoning Soca river river, you are more susceptible to head injuries, which can make you unconscious and pull you underwater. So, without proper equipment, fun activities like rafting (Bovec, Soca) and canyoning (Soca) can quickly take a turn for the worse.

Safety on the water

To have a good experience on the water, you need to make sure you are being safe all throughout your activity, whether it is simply swimming or going rafting (Bovec, Soca) and canyoning Soca river. The first step is to ensure you have all the right equipment. Do not forget a life jacket if you are not 100% confident in your swimming skills. Be aware of the environment and inform yourself about the potential risks. Rivers can be much faster than they look, so the current can quickly take you away if you are not mindful of this fact. If there is a sign that gives you instructions or prohibitions, never ignore it. It is certainly not there for decoration. Also, if you know you are going swimming in a rather questionable part, bring someone along. You might need backup. You will have a good time only if you stay safe.
